What is FSSAI?
Every food business, small or big, street-side eatery or a luxury restaurant, involved in the manufacturing, processing, storage distribution and sale of food products must obtain a license from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
FSSAI is an autonomous body that manages and governs the food business in India. This organization is established under the Ministry of Health and family welfare, Government of India.
Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 (FSS Act) is the unconsolidated stature related to the safety and regulation of food available in India, The Act ensures the food products undergo quality checks to eliminate the food alteration and selling of sub-standard products.
What are the types of FSSAI registration?
The FSSAI registration is a 14-digit license number which requires to be obtained ending on the size, turnover and nature of the business. There are three types of FSSAI registration:

What is the procedure of FSSAI registration?
To obtain FSSAI registration, there are two ways – online and offline. The procedure for FSSAI registration online is as follows:
Step one: On the FoSCoS portal, submit the FSSAI registration form according to the eligibility of the business as explained above.
Step Two: Attach the documents required for the FSSAI registration, which are listed in the next section.
Step Three: Whether the application is accepted or rejected, it is notified online on the FoSCoS portal. If rejected, the business gets the notification in writing too.
Step Four: The FSSAI office shall scrutinize the application and the documents minutely. The food inspector may inspect the place of business before granting permission.
Step Five: The authority shall grant an FSSAI registration certificate with the registration number, photo, and email ID of the applicant. The certificate requires to be displayed in such a place which can be easily visible to everyone.
What are the documents required for FSSAI registration?
The required documents for the registration of FSSAI are as follows:
● Photo identity proof of the food business operators – Aadhaar card/Passport/voter ID card
● Business constitution certificate, i.e. certificate of incorporation, shop, partnership deed, and establishment licence or other business registration certificate.
● Proof of possession of business premises, i.e. rent agreement, No Objection Certificate from the owner of the rented premises, utility bills etc.
● A dedicated plan for a food safety management system.
● List of food products manufactured or processed.
● Bank account information of the business.
● Any other support documents (if required) like NOC by Municipality or Panchayat, Health NOC, copy of License from the manufacturer, etc.
The FSSAI logo on the food products ensures the quality of food to the customers. The FSSAI registration number displayed on the food premises indicates that the premises comply with the hygiene and quality standards.
